Overview
The Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA) is offering a 12-month paid Graduate Internship Programme for suitably qualified South African graduates. This opportunity is aimed at graduates with a strong interest in research, data analysis, monitoring, evaluation, and development planning within the public sector.
The programme provides practical workplace exposure in a professional office environment, allowing graduates to gain hands-on experience while contributing to evidence-based decision-making in the health and social development sector.

Available Internship Opportunities
HWSETA is currently recruiting for the following graduate internship positions:
- Research Intern
- Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Intern
Both positions are based at the HWSETA offices in Bedfordview, Johannesburg.
Internship 1: Research Intern
The Research Intern will support research-related activities and projects within HWSETA. This role is ideal for graduates interested in data analysis, policy research, and sector planning.
Key Responsibilities May Include:
- Assisting with sector research projects
- Collecting, cleaning, and analysing qualitative and quantitative data
- Conducting literature reviews and policy research
- Supporting the drafting of research reports and sector skills plans
- Assisting with data interpretation and presentation
- Maintaining research documentation and databases
- Supporting stakeholder research engagements
Internship 2: Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Intern
The Monitoring and Evaluation Intern will assist in assessing the performance and impact of HWSETA-funded programmes and initiatives.
Key Responsibilities May Include:
- Supporting monitoring and evaluation frameworks
- Assisting with performance indicator tracking
- Analysing programme data and outcomes
- Supporting the preparation of M&E reports
- Verifying evidence submitted by funded projects
- Conducting data quality checks
- Assisting with reporting dashboards and continuous improvement processes
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- South African citizen
- Honours Degree in one of the following or related fields:
- Development Studies
- Population Studies
- Demography
- Statistics
Additional Skills and Attributes
- Strong analytical and research skills
- Good written and verbal communication
- Basic understanding of research methods or statistics
- Ability to work with data tools such as Excel, SPSS, STATA, or similar
- Interest in public sector development and skills planning
