About the Bursary

The City of Johannesburg is offering 200 bursaries to young South Africans who permanently reside in Johannesburg. This opportunity is part of the city’s commitment to providing skills development and educational support to the youth of Joburg.

If you’re a student planning to study full-time in 2026, this bursary could help cover your tuition, registration, and study materials.


Fields of Study

You can apply if you plan to study towards an undergraduate qualification in any of the following fields:

  • Actuarial Science
  • Built Environment (Architecture, Construction, Urban & Regional Planning, Quantity Surveying)
  • Commerce
  • Community Services
  • Emergency Management Services
  • Engineering (All Fields)
  • Finance (Accounting, Auditing, Economics, Treasury, Supply Chain, Small Business Management)
  • Health (All Fields)
  • Information Technology & Management (All Fields)
  • International Relations & Protocol
  • Legal
  • Logistics
  • Marketing
  • Municipal Governance (Monitoring & Evaluation)
  • Real Estate (Property Management, Valuation)
  • Geo Information Science (GIS)

What the Bursary Covers

  • Tuition and registration fees
  • Prescribed books and study materials
  • Up to R40 000 per academic year

The bursary is renewable each year based on your academic performance.


Who Can Apply

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Be South African citizens permanently living in Johannesburg
  • Have a strong academic record
  • Be studying or accepted to study at an accredited South African tertiary institution
  • Be registered for an undergraduate qualification (minimum 1 year)

Postgraduate studies do not qualify.


Required Documents

When applying, make sure to include certified copies of the following:

  • Most recent academic record
  • South African ID
  • Proof of residence in Johannesburg (water & lights or rates & taxes account)
  • Parent(s) or guardian(s) proof of income / death certificate(s) / affidavit (if applicable)
