Description

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is offering a Weather Observation Learnership for 2026. This one-year programme will be hosted at the SAWS Regional Training Centre in Pretoria and gives young South Africans the chance to gain practical, hands-on experience in weather observation and data collection.

Participants will receive structured classroom and field training focused on meteorological observations. After completing the programme, successful learners may be placed at one of SAWS’ regional offices. Because some of these positions include shift work, participants are encouraged to obtain a valid driver’s licence during the training period at their own cost.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered, applicants must have:

  • A Grade 12 (Matric) certificate with at least:
    • 50% for Mathematics (not Maths Literacy)
    • 50% for Physical Science
    • 50% for English
  • South African citizenship
  • A willingness to obtain a driver’s licence within the learnership period
  • Basic computer literacy and strong communication skills
